The Pont du Gard is an aqueduct built over the Gardon River in the first century AD to carry water to the Roman colony of Nîmes. Built to be three levels and 50 kilometers long, it is a perfect representation of Roman architecture. Not only was it was used to deliver water to the city, but it was also used as a toll bridge.
The Pont du Gard site is open to the public year-round, although if you want a guided tour, you should plan to go during the warmer months. Many people pack a picnic and layout on a blanket in the grassy field in front of the Pont du Gard. There are many activities to explore, including the museum and the exciting temporary exhibitions! The museum also has a Cinema room that shows a brief 13-minute video documenting the importance of Pont du Gard. The Pont du Gard is a beautiful and strong structure that shows how far we have come.
